Supported Formats

2Printer can automate printing from the command line. It supports more than 90 file formats (115 file extensions) including:

  • Images: TIFF, JPG, GIF, BMP, PNG, TGA, DCM, RAW, PSD, CDR, and other image types;
  • Office documents: PDF, DOC, DOCX, XPS, HTML, TXT, XLS, XLSX, CSV, PPT, PPTX, RTF, VSD, VSDX;
  • CAD drawings: DWG, DXF, DFT, SLDDRW;
  • Email files: EML, MSG, OST, PST, P7M, and many more.

2Printer's internal engine prints most file types on its own – there's no need to install any additional software to get things done. For some formats, though, you need to have a program installed that opens a specific file. Since you work with these files, it is likely that you already have the necessary software. Adobe PDF

PDF, Portable Document Format (.pdf) invented by Adobe is one of the most popular formats for document exchange nowadays. PDF can be opened in a browser, Adobe Acrobat Pro or Reader (or another PDF viewer). One of the key features of this format is its ability to preserve the original content, including pictures, links, and formatting. It displays the exact same content and layout no matter which hardware, software, or OS is used. The original file will look the same, whether on-screen or printed on paper. 2Printer can print PDF from command line: PDF/A, PDF/E, PDF/X, PDF Portfolio files, PDF files with attachments, and others. No additional software is required.

Adobe InDesign (*.indd, *.indp, *.idap, *.indt, *.indl, *.inx, *.idml, *.qxd, *.qxt, *.indb)

INDD files are usually used for publishing flyers, newspapers, and various visual layouts. Great news for graphic designers and production artists! 2Printer can batch print INDD and other InDesign files. Adobe InDesign must be installed on the system where 2Printer is used.

EML (*.eml)

Typically, EML files are email messages containing the content of a message, along with the subject, sender, recipient(s), and date. They can be opened by an email client, such as Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, or Apple Mail. These files can contain attachments and email headers. To process EML files and their attachments with 2Printer, you don't need to have Microsoft Outlook or another email client installed.

HEIC (*.heic, *.heif)

Originally developed by MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group), HEIF (.heif, .heic) is an image container format that Apple has adopted in iOS 11. It is now used as a default format for picture taking on their devices. They include still images and image sequences ("live photos"). Considering that JPEG format is rather "old" and Apple devices take photos and videos in HEIF format by default, this relatively new format is gaining popularity.

Please note that OS Windows 10 (or newer) operating system is required to let 2Printer batch print HEIC files. You must also install HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store. Learn more →

HPGL (*.hp *.hpg *.hpgl)

HPGL is a printer control language created by Hewlett-Packard. Initially used by HP plotters, it later became a standard for almost all plotters and printers. 2Printer supports both HPGL/1 and HPGL/2 formats.

iCalendar (*.ics)

2Printer can batch print Outlook iCalendar (.ics) files. An ICS file is an iCalendar file, which is a plain text file containing calendar event details like description, beginning and ending times, location, etc. To bulk print these files, Microsoft Outlook must be installed.

KOMPAS-3D (*.kdw, *.cdw, *.spw)

KOMPAS-3D is a CAD tool for 3D solid modeling and 2D drafting. File types created with this software may include drawings, specifications, and documentation. 2Printer can automate printing of KOMPAS-3D drawings of various paper sizes to any printer (a specific tray may also be defined) or plotter. KOMPAS-3D software must be installed so that 2Printer could batch print these files.

Microsoft Word (*.doc, *.docx, *.dot, *.dotx)

Word document is a proprietary format developed by Microsoft. Word documents are usually .doc or .docx files that are opened and edited by Word desktop app, which is a part of Microsoft 365 (also known as Office 365 or Microsoft Office Suite). 2Printer can automate printing of multiple Word documents: DOC or DOCX and other text documents such as RTF or TXT. To process these files, 2Printer will need Word (or OpenOffice or LibreOffice as free alternatives) installed.

Why are some Microsoft documents blocked by default?

Microsoft Office Trust Center may either totally block "old" or "risky" file types, or add an extra step of opening them in Protected View. This was made so that the user does not accidentally open potentially infected files or files with viruses contained in macros. For example, if you know you don't use DOC files and don't usually share them with customers, you can block them. This way, if you receive an infected file, you do not accidentally "automatically" open it, infecting your computer.

Opening these file types is optional and may be changed in Microsoft Word or Excel settings (Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings… > File Block Settings).

2Printer can print both "new" and "old" types of Word 95-2007 and Excel documents that are considered obsolete. These files may not be opened in Word or Excel by default, but 2Printer can auto print them with no issues.

PLT (*.plt)

PLT file extension is most commonly associated with the Autodesk AutoCAD software application. The PLT files that are used by CAD software contain vector graphic plotter files. Other applications also use the .plt extension for plotter files, such as the HP Graphics Language and OziExplorer software applications.

SWF (*.swf)

Small Web Format is a file extension for a Shockwave Flash file format created by Macromedia and now owned by Adobe. It is designed for efficient delivery over the web and can contain video and vector-based animations or sound.

Zebra ZPL (*.zpl)

Zebra ZPL file format invented by Zebra Technologies is used to create shipping labels, industrial barcodes, or QR-codes for produсt items and goods. Based on ZPL II programming language, it has become a standard for developing label files. ZPL label printers use this format as instruction for creating the images printed on the labels. For example, it tells the printer the print density, label size, position, and other parameters.
